THE NIGHT I NEARLY MET JOHNNY DEPP
Johnny Depp to receive the Maltin Modern Master Award for his outstanding performance as mobster Whitey Bolger in the film “Black Mass” The Martin Modern Award is the highest honor at SBIFF. Thursday February 4th 2016
Johnny Depp was in our shop Brian de Staic Jewellers in Dingle many years ago.
The girl serving him didn’t know who he was. He bought a silver Brian de Staic Celtic ring. http://www.briandestaic.com
I was so disappointed that I wasn’t in the shop.
I missed my chance in Dingle to meet the legendary Johnny Depp.
Santa Barbara International Film Festival = another opportunity 😁
Our first experience with “The Dude” in The Arlington Theatre was a learning curve. We knew exactly what to do on the second night.
“Taithí a dhéanann máistreacht.” Practise makes perfect.
Seán , Megan, Máiréad & Brian de Staic on the red carpet after the Q&A session with moderator Leonard Maltin & Johnny Depp.
We had V.I.P. Film Maker passes which allowed us to stay in the red carpet area. We arrived at the theatre, & quickly made our way to the VI.P. Gate. This time we delighted and savoured the moments in front of all the cameras flashing.
“Lights, camera, action 🎬🎬🎬 ✨✨✨
We were also aware that a few thousand people in the theatre were watching us✨✨✨
We chatted with the cameramen & crew. We posed for photos like professionals. Magical moments, magical memories.
We waited in the foyer of the theatre.
We got to know the dedicated volunteers.
Every year the Santa Barbara International Film Festival brings together a dedicated team of volunteers. SBIFF is a non-profit organisation.
SBIFF 2016 had over 700 Volunteers. Volunteers get to experience close interactions with film directors & film stars
Executive Direcur Roger Durling thanks the dedicated volunteers at the last screening of SBIFF 2016
The lovely ladies in red (Volunteers) were excited to meet the Wearing of the Green Dingle Sister City Delegation. These ladies have been volunteering for years.
I asked where was the best place to wait to get to see or maybe meet the extraordinary talented Mr. Depp 🌟🌟🌟
There are several entrances into the foyer of the theatre 🎭 🎭 🎭
One very nice lady told me to talk to one of the crew members
I approached a crew member, she was delightful. She loved us, our accents, the fact that we were delegates from the Sister City Dingle, Ireland.
Her grandmother was Margaret Mulligan from Cork, Ireland.
My maiden name is Margaret Mullins – soul mates.
I told her that I was going to call her Margaret Mulligan – she loved it ☘️💕💕💕
She directed us to an entrance on the left. There was a wine bar so we didn’t feel the time waiting sipping Californian wine 🍷 🍷🍷
Panic sets in Johnny Depp is running late ………..
Rumors spread quickly throughout the foyer Johnny Depp
is a ‘no show’ 😞😞 😞
I look over at Margaret Mulligan – she beckons to us to follow her.
“Stay here, Johnny is outside and will make his entrance through this door”
I couldn’t believe it. We were only two feet away from the door.
We could hear all the cheering & commotion outside on the streets.
I’m a huge fan of Johnny Depp. I love his films & the characters he’s portrayed. My mind is full of images from his films :
Willie Wonka, Captain Jack, Scissorhands, The Mad Hatter, Tonto, Whitey Bolger.
I’m about to see JOHNNY DEPP!
The large wooden double swigs open ………… Lights & cameras flashing ✨✨✨⚡️⚡️⚡️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The man in black woos the crowd.
Depp oozes charisma, personality, uniqueness, individuality, funkiness.
Tattoos galore and sporting 3 safely pins as earrings. He is wearing lots of jewelry. Ideas for Brian de Staic Jewellery?? I’m besotted.
Photo credit a very excited Me – Apologies for the poor quality.
Mr. Depp is waving at the fans.
He’s getting closer, he has an aura.
He’s handsome, charming & confident yet I can feel his shyness, sensitivity & kindness.
Then I’m looking him in the eye. I’m about to shake hands with him when a sea of red tee shirted volunteers surround him.
They are ecstatic, Depp is delighted 😀 He laughs, chats, jokes with the ladies.
I’m loving him even more 💖
I could have spoken to him but it was more appropriate and fun to watch “The Ladies in Red” have their moment 💕💕💕💕
It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. Depp presented one of the ladies with a bouquet of flowers 💐
I couldn’t have felt prouder of my idol. He gets it.
Beidh lá eile ag an bPaorach. We will get another opportunity
The theatre doors are about to close. We take our seats for the Q&A session with moderator Leonard Maltin & Johnny Depp.

The crowd cheering , clapping, celebrating “The Captain”
Johnny Depp’s Q&A session with Leonard Maltin was informative, informal, interesting & intriguing.
Depp’s answers were weird and wonderful. He spoke about Brando, Al Pacino and Director Tim Burton.
I loved the interview. What a pleasure to watch Johnny Depp onstage and listen to his stories!
We didn’t stay to watch “Black Mass” as we’d seen it recently.
The Theatre is full, the red carpet vacated, the press taking a break. We enjoy the ambience. Happy Campers.
It was a great night .
